J36 Crooklands Livestock Auction: J36 New Year Show of Store Cattle. Fortnightly Sale of Calves, OTM Cattle, Stirks & Store Cattle, Thursday 8th January 2026.

STORE CATTLE

A new year and a Store Cattle trade that waste no time in finding its feet.

The first Store Cattle sale of the year here at J36 set a highly encouraging tone for 2026. Buyers returned with confidence and a plethora of new buyers increased competition ringside resulting in a tremendous trade throughout.

Today’s sale also included a show section which was kindly judged by Mr George Rome and sponsored by Carrs Billington, Skipton and Peregrine Asset Finance. The overall Champion today being awarded the Janet Gorst Perpetual Challenge Trophy

Limousin bullocks topped today at £2540 for a cracker from Messrs RS & BA Harker who had a fantastic run forward. Messrs MA & JA Winn sold their tremendous packet of cattle to £2500 and £2480 for Limousin bullocks. British Blue and Simental bullocks also hit £2480 from Messrs RT Gorst and G & P Long respectively.

Limousin heifers hit £2520 at 17 month old from Messrs M &L Preece who sold another at 15 months old for £2340. British Blue heifers reached £2460 from Messrs G & P Long.

CULL COWS/OTMS

A very pleasing market average of 256p/kg was achieved for all sold today with buyers ringside for all types and requiring more at each sale.

The best beef cows sold to 379.5p/kg or £3195 for a Limousin x from PJ & ES Rogerson with the other half of the best end cows 310p/kg – 345p/kg or £2800 - £3100. Mediums for further finishing were 275p/kg – 290p/kg from Jenkin Crag Farms and £1856 from S&M Cooper, others generally 240p/kg – 250p/kg and £1600 upwards with parlour types 210p/kg – 230p/kg or £1200 - £1400. Just a handful of leaner cows at realisation.

OTM beef heifers sold to 369.5p/kg for BrBx from KD&C Armer and £2412 for Limousin x from RG & R Holmes. Dairy heifers to 334.5p/kg or £2351 from Strickland Hill Farming.

Steers to 374.5p/kg and £2411 for BrBx from JW Robinson & Son.

STIRKS

A fantastic start to 2026 with this popular sale continually attracting new customers both buying and selling.

Steers peaked at £1590 for 9 month old Limousin x from PG & PD Airey who sold others at £1580 and £1550. Well reared BrBx steers (10 month old) from S Ashcroft sold at £1530 with a ring full of Aberdeen Angus x (9/10 month old) from JJ & J Woof & Sons selling at £1480 and £1430. Beef bred steers sold nicely at £1050 - £1300 for those 8-10 month old with the younger end to £1130 for 6 month old Limousin x from RJ & D Holden and £1080 (7 month old) Hereford x from JS & IM Wilson. 4 month old Aberdeen Angus x sold at £810 from Messrs Young.

Heifer stirks peaked at £1680 for a red 9 month old Limousin x from PG & PD Airey. Others sold at £1380 and £1340 from CD Slinger & LJ Eaton and BrBx to £1310 from JP & AE Cooper. A sale of predominantly younger heifers sold to £1290 for Charolais x from R & BJ Cleasby and Aberdeen Angus x to £1140 from L Thompson and £1100 for BrBx from F & TE Park.

A nice sample of bull stirks were forward selling to £1300 for a 9 month old Aberdeen Angus x and younger suckler bred bulls sold to £1180 for 4 month old Charolais x from R & BJ Cleasby. Best dairy x beef bulls sold to £1280 (6 months old) for BrBx from F& TE Park and 5 month old to £1170 from JS & IM Wilson, others selling to £960 - £1100. Dairy bulls sold to £850 for 7 month old blank and whites from SI Porter.

CALVES

The opening sale of 2026 saw all pens full pre-sale with buyers ringside keen to fill pens after the festive break.

Well reared, BrBx bulls from Bamber Farms sold to £950 (x2) with others £880 from J & B Morley and Charolais x £860 from SW & K Metcalfe & Son. Best of the rearing calves were £840, £820 for Charolais x from Messrs Gibson & Berry with others £780 from JH Towers & Sons, £770 GJ & G Billington and £740 C Dean & LJ Brennand. Month old beef bulls generally £580 - £660 with younger 2/3 week old £480 - £540.

Dairy bulls sold to £380 (x 2) and £370 from AK & BM Robinson & Son with younger rearing sorts £80 - £150 depending on strength and quality.

Heifers topped at £870, £850, £840 and £810 again from Bambers Farms Ltd with others £800 from J & B Morley. Stronger rearers were £640 for BrBx from A Pickthall with others £580 - £620, mediums £500 - £570 with younger 2 week old beef heifers £320 - £400.
